Yes I said it, Shame…on…me. Just because I go back home to Ottawa for christmas and stuff my face with Beaver tails and poutine, does not mean it gives me the right to slack on my webpage. So my punishment will be to find the equivalent to Beaver tails here in Copenhagen and stuff my face some more But no more slacking!
But I must say there has been a lot going on this past month. I made a quarter finals at the Canadian International in Moncton, losing to Carl Baxter, the Ottawa home grown Englishman. I then competed in the Toronto Open and had some very tough matches to get myself into the finals. All of that hard to work to lose to a young Indonesian player 19-21 in the third. That really rubbed me the wrong way.

When I got back to Copenhagen, I was preparing for the Swedish International and slightly tweaked something while training. I played a Team match a few days before and got my first win as #1 men’s singles in the Liga. However, I did not feel confident that my “injury” was fully healed and pulled out of Sweden to prepare for Uganda next week.

In the meantime our team here in Copenhagen had another team match, we are trying to stay in the Liga since we are one of the bottom teams. We played vs Team Aarhus our arch rivals, and gave a good beating…..well not really-we narrowly won 4-2, but it felt good to take it. My match was another barn burner (since it seems its the only way I know how to play). I made a huge comeback in the second set only to let this Dane beat me 18 in the third. Once again my body is broken. But not my spirit!

I will be flying to Uganda on tuesday and hopefully humpty dumpty will be put back together and take the title. It will be the Bonanza in Uganda

Here is the link and stay tuned!
This club has been the best kept secret in the Danish League for a few years….but now the secret is out and they are on top! Rødovre is a relatively small badminton club and was not sure it had ambitions to move from the Denmark Series to 3rd Division. As the season progressed and our team kept winning team match after team match, we were getting the taste of victory. By the end of the regular season we went undefeated and the smell of 3rd division was irresistable as we went into the playoffs. We had 4 matches in the playoffs and we needed to win 3 to ensure our ascent to 3rd Division. We won 3 out of 3 team matches but two of them we only won 7-6 which did not give us the full points that we needed. Fortune seemed to shine on Rødovre because the only team that could have surpassed us did not get enough points on their last team match. That meant that even though we did lose our final team match in the playoffs it did not matter because we were guaranteed our prize…..3rd Division!

On the final night all the clubs in Copenhagen had a big party and the players of Rødovre walked in the room with their heads held high. All eyes were fixed on the new divisions players…people were talking about Rødovre and its achievements…or it could have been the beer that made it feel that way:)

I have to say that coaching Rødovre this year has been very special and I am happy that I got to share many great moments with all the players. It was a great surprise when the players gathered together, picked me up and threw me in the air as a celebration. I would like to thank Rødovre for a fantastic season.

In life there are always ups and downs….it was a big downer that Lillerød lost in the quarter finals this year but incredible that Rødovre went up. I am glad that things work out in the end:)

Let’s see what happens next year!

Our team went in feeling very optimistic that we could beat team Aarhus on their home courts. We had a very good chance in many matches. We were also pretty pumped that we were getting our first TV match this year.
The first match to go on was Karina Jørgensen (Lillerød) against Maria Herskind (Aarhus). We thought that this would be a one sided match for us and we thought right. Karina won in two straight sets 21-11 21-12.

The second match was Peter Mikkelsen (Lillerød) against Jan Ø. Jørgensen (Aarhus). Of course Jan is the favourite on paper but Peter has upset one top player after another including Peter Gade! So we had no idea which way it would turn out. But unfortunatly for us Jan was VERY stable and not giving Peter one inch to work with. Peter was also struggling with his attacks and made too many unforced errors. Jan won the match in two sets 21-11 21-17

The third match on court was the men’s doubles. It was Peter Steffensen and Mikkel Elbjørn Larsen (Lillerød) against Jakob Staael and Kasper Henriksen (Aarhus). This match was a real uncertainty…we felt that it could go either way. Both teams were very even but Aarhus had the home court advantage. Unfortunatly that advantage paid off for Aarhus and their men’s doubles won in two entertaining sets 21-19 21-16.

At this point it was 2-1 for Aarhus and we needed to win our fourth match, which was our ladies doubles. Our ladies doubles has been the pillar of our team. They had only lost one match all season coming into this match. Rikke Olsen Siegemund and Ann Nielsen (Lillerød) were the ace up our sleaves. But we knew that their opponents Line Kruse and Lena Frier Kristiansen (Aarhus) were going to be a very tough team to beat. Well they were not just tough to beat, they were unbeatable. As hard as our ladies tried last night, the magic was not there. The Aarhus ladies made quick work of our girls and took the match 21-14 21-18.

I was then the next match to go on. I knew that we were down 3-1 and needed my match as well as the mixed doubles who were playing on the court beside me. I was matched up against Morten Brødbæk. Last time we played he beat me in two sets….so I was set on revenge. We started off very even by playing alot of mid court shots to each other and trying to win the net. But even if we won the net it was tough to put the shuttle down, so it took a little bit of variation from the backline in order to create an oppening. I was down 11-10 at the break but stuck with him all the way until 19-19. I then got a set point 20-19 but he did not let me have it so easily. He pushed me until 22-22, where I finally was able to win the set 24-22.
In the second set we played until 11-8 but then was told that the match was over. We both looked very confused but then realized that the Lillerød mixed doubles had lost the match which meant that Team Aarhus won 4-1. Once the team match is over they stop everything, including our match. It was a shame not to be able to finish him off. But even more sad is that Lillerød was now out and the season is over.

I have to say it was a very exciting season and I enjoyed every moment and the great team spirit that Lillerød brought to every game. I look forward to play for them again next season.

The first team match we played at home against Vendsyssel. We were hoping to be able to win 3 matches to make it 3-3 and push it to a golden set, where only one set in any discipline decides who wins the team match. However 2 of the 3 matches we were banking on were 50/50 matches. Our ladies singles had to play Anna Rice (a surprise since nobody knew she was still playing in the league) and my singles against Kristian Midtgaard. But then we got a surprise win from Peter Mikkelsen against Eric Pang, winning in two sets 21-11 24-22. That match really put the wind in our sails and we kept getting the breaks after that. Karina Jørgensen won in 3 close sets against Anna Rice, 22-20 14-21 21-16. I then won my match againt Kristian in two tough sets 21-11 22-20. Finaly our ladies doubles took it home to give us the win 4-2! That was a big surprise, and a joyous one at that:)

Last night we played the #2 team in the League, Værløse. Once again we were the underdogs but we believed we could do some damage if everyone plays well like last week. Again we were banking on 3 matches to force it to a golden set. The two men’s singles and the ladies doubles. But again all of those matches were 50/50. We almost had a great surprise with our men’s doubles leading 18-13 in the third but then losing it 21-19. It was a small dose of what was to come. In our first men’s singles Peter Mikkelsen played against Kasper Ibsen. They had an incredible battle that was top notch badminton. Peter had a 20-17 lead in the third, when he got a VERY controversial line call against him to give Ibsen 18-20. Peter did not regain his composure and then lost the next 4 rallies. That was the final blow for any hope of winning, since it put us 4-0 down. The last two matches were mine and the ladies doubles. Our ladies doubles, who are arguably the 2nd best pair in the league, won the match in 3 tight sets,19-21 21-18 21-17. My match was in incredible victory in itself. I was playing against Emil Vind, who had beaten me a few months ago in a “tournament team match”. My goal was to redeem myself but he put up some incredible resistance. He took the first set 21-14 by always being high at the net and keeping me under pressure. The second set I was down 14-10 when I decided to change tactics and play as fast as I could. This enabled me to take back the net and win alot of quick rallies. I took that set 21-17. In the third I started off well to be up 11-8 but then found myself trailing for most of the second half. I could not put anything through him. He went up 20-17! But then somehow I calmed down, refocused and just let the rallies happen. I won 5 straight rallies to take the match! I could not believe it. However it still meant that the team lost 4-2.
We still keep our 5th place position but I think this shows that we are the Dark Horse in the league and should never be underestimated.

This match was important in several ways. First, it was crucial that our team wins in order to stay in the middle of the ranking list so that we don’t have to worry about going down next season. Second it was another rematch for me against Niels Christian Kaldau. 6 years ago I had to play him in an exhibition match in Calgary,Alberta. During that match in the first set he played a very deceptive shot that I will never forget. That shot made me move in a very unnatural way which ended up tearing my ACL (anterior cruciate ligament). That injury set me back almost 2 years. In 2008 I had a chance to play him again in front of a television crew (TV5) that was doing a documentary on me about my badminton carreer and my time in Denmark. In that match Niels Christian Kaldau crushed me. I felt mentaly unable to compete with him. Last tuesday I was granted one more chance, and this time I made no mistake about it. I had a set game plan for him and tried to keep my thoughts on every rally. The game plan was to stay forward and keep pressuring him from the net. This tactic worked flawlessly in the first set. I was very high on the net and he was making mistake after mistake. I took the first set 21-11. In the second set it was more of a fight. He started being more consistent and picking up on my game. However I did not waiver and was confident that I could beat him, so I was all in with my tactic. We struggled until 15-15 and then, a few good shots by me and a few mistakes by him put me at 19-16. This was enough for me to close the match 21-17. The relief of winning that match was incredible and being able to put that nightmare to rest was priceless. The
team ended up winning 5-1 with many close matches. We are now 6th out of 10 teams in the League. My hope for the team is to stay around there until the playoffs arrive in the new year.

Our next match is this tuesday against Vendsyssel. They are in 5th place but have a very good team. We will see what happens!

I am now playing for Lillerød Badminton Club who are in the Elite Divsion. It was one of my ambitions when I first came to Denmark to be able to play in the Elite Divsion and here is my chance. Our first match on Monday was against a club called Gentofte. Our team is quite solid and we knew we had a good chance of winning the team match. In the Elite divsion the team match format is different, you have 6 matches (2 Men’s Singles,1 Ladies singles and doubles,1 Men’s doubles and mixed doubles). If both teams win 3 matches it goes to what they call a Golden Set. Which means that only play one set to 21 to determine who wins (the event is chosen by each team eliminating one event that they do not want to play until there is only one possible option left). This is important because in our first team match we had it come down to the wire. We narrowly lost our Mixed doubles (we had 3 match points) and then barely won our ladies doubles. We was even 2-2 after our 1st Men’s singles and Ladies singles…and then I came in. I am the second men’s singles on the team and had to face Morton Kronborg. It was a bit tough since we were playing on their home courts but I got a very good feel for my opponent early on and I never really let go. I was able to be successful with my varied attack and taking control of the net. I usualy had the lead and I ended up winning the match 21-16 21-13. Unfortunatly we did not manage to win our men’s doubles which led us to a Golden Set showdown. The decision was that we had to play a men’s doubles for the Golden Set and unfortunatly we lost it 21-17. Which meant that we lost the team match 3-4.

We then had our second team match on Thursday. This did not give us much time to pick ourselves up but we were pretty fired up since we were now playing at home and had no intention to lose two times in the same week. This time we played against team Odense. Once again the team match started with the mixed doubles and boy ohh boy what a match it was. We ended coming back from being 11-16 down in the third! This was very important because now we were in a great position to win the whole thing. Our men’s doubles and ladies doubles did a great job putting us into a winning postion which was 3-2 for us. I was the last match and had a home crowd backing me up. I was set to play against a player from Israel Misha Zilberman. I had never played before but I know that he is very quick. All through the first set it was close..and a very strange match since he was always doing alot of trick shots and putting me into funny postions. However my ability to stay steady and wait for my openings proved to be better and I took the first set 21-17. In the second it was much of the same…him being quite speedy and tricky but always opening the court with a cross lift or an unwise attack. In the end I was victorious and won the match 21-17 21-16. The home crowd went wild and I felt in my element….I love this game:)

Our next team match is next month so we will be getting ready for that. However I have a tournament this week in Ukraine which I will write about in the next upcoming days.

Last weekend Lyngby played a team match against Roedovre Badminton Klub. The match against Roedovre was the first match of the play offs in order to try and go up to the 3rd Division. We are currently in the Denmark Series and finished top of our group in the ground play and now we are playing against the top 4 teams in another group in order to go up. The way it goes is the top team from one group plays the 4th team of the other, then the third, then the second and then the first teams of each group meet. In the end the top two teams with the most points after the playoffs will then move up to the 3rd division.

We had the chance to play the first team match at home. We started great by going up 5-1 with me winning my singles in two straight sets. I thought the team match was in the bag until things started to go wrong. We lost the next 3 matches and let them come back to 5-4. All of a sudden we had a ballgame. We had one ladies doubles left and 3 men’s doubles. We brought the boys in for a little pep talk. It seemed to have worked since the ladies and all the boys won their matches! We took the team match 9-4 and also became the leaders in the play offs.

We have 3 more team matches to go. The next one will be against Humlebaek Badminton Klub on the 27th of February. We look forward to playing since we are a VERY confident team:)

Yesterday Lyngby Badminton Klub played against Vaerlose Badminton Klub in a showdown between the top two teams in the group. Vaerlose is a massive club with many teams, so we were not sure what their line up was going to be but we knew that it was going to be a battle. However we also knew that all we needed to do was to get one point off of Veerlose in order to have a very good chance to stay first in our group. And if we got 3 points then we are guaranteed to be first for the play offs. We started off very even against Vaerlose by spliting the first the mixed doubles and the women’s singles. But then it was the men’s singles and we took 3 out of 4 which means we went up 5-3. Then it was the ladies doubles time to shine, and they did. They won both matches which meant we were up 7-3, which also means that we had achieved our goal of getting minimum 6 matches. But we were not done yet, we wanted all three points, which means we have to win 8 matches. So my men’s doubles was the first to play and we took it home for Lyngby in 3 sets. In the end we won 9-4 and we partied like it was 1999!

Our next team match will be after the new year’s in January against Taastrup. So that means the team has time to enjoy the holidays and put on their winter fur:) After our match against Taastrup the play-offs will start and we will see if we can go up into a higher division.
Good job Lyngby and get the rest you deserve:)

Last weekend might have been the MOST exciting team match I have ever played and coached. Saturday afternoon Lyngby Badminton Klub played at home against Farum Badminton Klub. Farum is the 4th best team in our pool but has lost to the top teams in VERY close matches. Ours was no exception. We started our first round of mixed doubles and ladies singles which went very well for Lyngby. We won 1 mixed doubles and 2 ladies singles which put us ahead 3-1 right of the bat. However our first ladies singles was a barn burner since she won 21-19 in the third set! It was great!
Second round is usualy a good one for us because it is men’s singles, and we are very strong. However instead of coming out with 3 or 4 more matches under our belts we split the men’s singles! That was a bit of a shock…which put the score 5-3 for us heading into the ladies double. For a moment I thought we were out of the woodworks when I saw our first ladies doubles dominating and our second ladies doubles taking the first set. But then our second ladies lost the match 21-19 in the third! So we went to the last round of matches which was men’s doubles being up 6-4. We needed to win one match to win the team match but we needed two matches to COMPLETELY win the team match (if you win 7-6 then both teams splits the 3 points that is giving to a team for winning….but if you win 8 matches or more you get all 3 points) So I play the first doubles and LOSE…my first loss of the season. Then our 3rd men’s doubles wins in 3 sets, so we have “won” the team match but still do not have all the points we want. So it came down to the 2nd men’s doubles which was also in 3 sets. They were down 20-13 in the third! and came back to win 23-21!! I swear it felt like a miracle because I have never seen such a comeback in doubles.
I can tell you that I was so emotionaly drained from all the high’s and low’s during the team match that I needed a few minutes on my own to re-group.
So I have to say a job well done by our team:) Now we are playing one more match before Christmas and that will be against Vaerlose Badminton Klub. They are number two in the pool and will be VERY tough to beat. So I hope we bring our A game next weekend because we are going to need it!

Another great day for Lyngby Badminton Klub. Our team played away yesterday afternoon in Frederiksberg (Copenhagen) against Frederiksberg Badminton Klub. This was going to be a very big challenge for us since they were the #2 team in the group and we were, and still are, the #1 team in our group. However when not playing on home courts and not quite knowing the opponents all that well, anything can happen.
The whole team played very well and we took a comanding lead right off the bat when both our mixed doubles and both our women’s singles won the first 4 matches. But 3 out of those 4 matches were in 3 sets, so it was quite the challenge to win. Then luck should have it one of their top players injured his leg (not severely) and had to stop the match which means that we won both matches he was supposed to play by default. From there our momentum was too great and we ended up winning the Team match 10-3.

That was a great victory for us, however after yesterday’s matches a new #2 team has emerged which means we will have to have another clash of the titans before the year is over. Our next team match will be against Farum Badminton Klub on the 28th of November 2009. We will be playing this one at home which is always an advantage. They are number 4 in the group.
