The One Month Summary :)

Shame on me. Yes I said it, Shame…on…me. Just because I go back home to Ottawa for christmas and stuff my face with Beaver tails and poutine, does not mean it gives me the right to slack on my webpage. So my punishment will be to find the equivalent to Beaver tails here in Copenhagen and stuff my face some more But no more slacking!
But I must say there has been a lot going on this past month. I made a quarter finals at the Canadian International in Moncton,losing to Carl Baxter, the Ottawa home grown Englishman. I then competed in the Toronto Open and had some very tough matches to get myself into the finals. All of that hard to work to lose to a young Indonesian player 19-21 in the third. That really rubbed me the wrong way.

When I got back to Copenhagen, I was preparing for the Swedish International and slightly tweaked something while training. I played a Team match a few days before and got my first win as #1 men’s singles in the Liga. However, I did not feel confident that my “injury” was fully healed and pulled out of Sweden to prepare for Uganda next week.

In the meantime our team here in Copenhagen had another team match, we are trying to stay in the Liga since we are one of the bottom teams. We played vs Team Aarhus our arch rivals, and gave a good beating…..well not really-we narrowly won 4-2, but it felt good to take it. My match was another barn burner (since it seems its the only way I know how to play). I made a huge comeback in the second set only to let this Dane beat me 18 in the third. Once again my body is broken. But not my spirit!

I will be flying to Uganda on tuesday and hopefully humpty dumpty will be put back together and take the title. It will be the Bonanza in Uganda

Radio-Canada Interview for the Canada Open 2011

At last week’s Canada Open I was interviewed the day after my matches against Dieter Domke and Kevin Cordon. Radio-Canada had requested a french speaking athlete and they got me:) We did a lengthy interview but it only ended up being a 10 second clip of my thoughts on what it takes to be a successful Canadian badminton player and the upcoming world championships in August. But hey any time on tv..is good time on tv:)

New Year’s Resolution

I had a hard time to figure out what my new year’s resolution would be this year..but i think I finaly figured it out..I am going to become a yes man. No more boring no’s all the time. Its time for the Yes Man year. This was the inspirational video that took me to this conclusion. Learning To Roll With The Punches

These last two weeks have been a rough ride. During the Czech International I knew that I was mentally tired and it was going to be difficult to keep my level for all the matches I had coming up. But keeping my level was easier said than done. After the Czech International I had a team match against Greve, the Bulgarian International and then another team match against Aarhus. I was hoping that somehow I could pull myself out from my temporary slump, but sometimes when the body says enough….it means enough. All 3 of my matches from the competitions listed above were struggles. I lost them all. After the last team match against Aarhus I was pretty down on myself. It wasn’t until I put things into perspective that I realized “hey things arn’t so bad”. For the last 9 months I have been playing the best badminton of my life, and to let two weeks out of 9 months put me down is ridiculous. Have I lost some bad matches? Yes. Have I played some ugly badminton? Yes. But that is part of the game. The other side of the coin is: Have I had some of my best results? Yes. Have I been more consistent this year than any other previous year? Yes. That is the positive and that is what I am going to stick to. If I dwell too much on a few of my losses its going to be a long and painful carreer:)
I posted a picture of my first exhibition match back from my knee surgery. A reminder of touger times…..that eventually healed.

I am off to Brazil next week for the Pan American Championships. Win or Lose, I look forward to playing well. See you there!

Stephan The Man on TV5 November 18th

I would like to make a quick annoucement to all my stephantheman readers that I will be on television on the 18th of November at 22.30 (eastern standard time). I will be on a station called TV5 which is a french television station and the show is called “Plus loin + sport”. The episode will be lasting 30m and will be about my badminton life here in Copenhagen,Denmark.
So for those of you who do not speak or understand french you have exactly one week to learn:) For those of you who cannot learn the language in time, there is quite a bit of english in it for you to know what’s going on.

Glamour in Copenhagen at Hotel D’Angleterre

This weekend I thought I would treat myself and impress my mother by staying at our favorite Copenhagen Hotel….Hotel D’Angleterre. My parents lived in Copenhagen for 5 years before I was born and I was told that they walked by that hotel everyday and thought it was spectacular. So when my mother told me she was coming into town, I thought that I could get some good brownie points by putting her up in style. Our room was on the first floor with a balcony. The balcony was the length of the room in the centre of the Hotel with a coffee table and two chairs. Its beautiful view was looking over the famous Kongens Nytorv (Kings Square). We then spent a few hours relaxing in spa before heading out for dinner. The next morning we enjoyed an incredible breakfast buffet filled with all sorts of food,juices,smoothies and even champagne.

All in all it was a weekend to remember for both my mother and myself. Even you ever have the chance to walk inside or stay in the hotel I HIGHLY recomend it.

U.S Open 2009 Semi Final Match Correction

I made a slight mistake with posting my match. All 3 parts of my video was the same and I appologize for those who tried to watch. I have now corrected my mistake and have put the missing segments of my match…unfortunatly it still stops short in the second set because my camera’s battery life runs out.

Memories of Indonesia Open 2009

I was able to take a little bit of footage at the Indonesian Open Super Series 2009 and wanted to share it with everyone. I mentioned before that the atmosphere in the hall is crazy and how everybody goes nuts for badminton…especialy indonesian badminton players:) I filmed the last little bit of the match between Sony Dwi Kuncoro (Indonesia) and Chan Yan Kit (Hong Kong) in the quarter finals. You will notice how everyone LOVES it when Sony scores a point and how they are “Boo-ing” Chan everytime he hits the shuttle and “Ya-ing” everytime Sony hits the shuttle.
I also filmed one of the fans who got REALLY into it and got all dressed up for the occasion. He was creating the Wave for all the fans in the stadium and was doing a very good job. I thought I would also film him in action since he was quite entertaining.
There are also a few pictures of him along with a friend of his who is also looking good for the tournament:)
