I realize that I have not updated my website since I have played the Polish International 2010. I also realize that all the major news networks and newspapers are waiting anxiously to get the scoop on what happened last weekend in Bialystok,Poland. Well wait no longer because here is what happened.
I played my first round against Dmytro Zavadsky of Ukraine. I was playing very well (as usual) and could feel that I had a good chance of beating the 5th seed. In the first set I had trouble smashing, so I mainly focused on either knocking the shuttle down or slicing and then try and put pressure from the net. It worked and I won 21-16. In the second set he tried to take the net away from me, which worked a bit, but then I was just pinning him more on the back line. I also was able to find my smash and could win a few more points with that. All was going well until 20-15 for me. He played a very good hold lift to my backhand side and I buckled a bit and twisted my ankle. I had to take a 5 minute break and get the doctore to freeze spray and bandage my ankle because no matter what I had to finish the match. He managed to win the next rally which put him at 17-20 but then I managed to get the lift and hit a smash down the line to win the match 21-17. After that I had to withdraw from my next match because my ankle was in too much pain. However here is the tricky part.
Earlier that morning for breakfast I bumped into Christian Lind Thomsen (Denmark) and had a small chat. He asked me what time I was playing and I said “12.25pm” which was the original time of my match. As luck would have it the tournament changed the time the night before and Christian was kind enough to tell me. So I wolfed down my breakfast and took the first taxi I saw to the tournament hall. I made it in plenty of time, but if it was not for Christian I would not have made it at all. So here comes the question. Was I supposed to miss the match? If I would not have played then I would have a healthy ankle today…..or was I meant to win my match against Zavadsky? I guess I will never know.
My next tournament is back home in Montreal, Canada for the Canadian International 2010. Lets hope I am healed and good to go.
See you there!
